Artist Statement

My paintings are anthropological and autobiographical studies of the times from the pre war 40's through the current suburban landscape in which the artist, myself resides. I am the observer in a world of privilege and the child who better understands and is often nostalgic about the past of my life. The memories are held inside the canvas like snapshots in an album. The small, faded black and white photos I work from encourage me to create the past in color and light as I remember it or as I imagined it to be. In my painting the "Mah Jong Ladies" the room is bathed in warm yellow ochre light and the women are viewed from overhead. I am outside but hover over their intimate conversations during the course of their game. In my paintings I touch the past, present and future in all of our lives and relate the common human experiences. I bring to life family photos where all seems care free and fun. Emotions often not revealed but imagined. In the painting "Skullly of Skelly" The children kneel down on the blue grey pavements on a cold crisp day playing a game of skully; a common street game played in the Bronx.

In juxtaposition my paintings of the suburban lifestyle capture the actions of myself and those around me in everyday activities; the gym, the manicurists, the women playing golf or getting ready for a tournament at the "Very Private Country Club. In my painting "The Gym" the trainer looks out- he is important, sometimes aloof in this environment. He dominates the foreground while the the others work hard at their obsession of "keeping in shape." In my painting "The Tournament" the women are dressed in pastels and they inhabit a carefree but sometimes gossipy and unkind environment. One enters this world and tries to understand if we are seeing expectations enjoyed by a selected few in a troubled world or the dreams come true for those who have worked hard and have aspired to live in "This Suburban Landscape." or possibly a combination of both. My beaches are filled with people from the past and present. They are awash in light and reflection.

The paintings of my travels capture that which we all know and never even had to leave home to experience.  The smooth texture and strong colors of "Matryoshka" ("Russian Nesting Dolls.") and the "Puppets of Prague" have all been a part of our past; that which is "foreign" often feels familiar. The large puppet in the corner is the "Puppet master" to the others as they dangle from their strings and hooks waiting to be chosen. My paintings of Haiti now have a nostalgia one could not have foretold, as they are based on a visit in the seventies. The images retrieved from old slides they are truly frozen moments.

This is my time to paint and explore all that intrigues me. It allows me to go from the past, to the present and travel to the future without fear of failure. The paintings are the photos of my experiences and I fill the album of my life.  I am simply on life's journey and when I paint I am in a state of carefree childhood.
